The Clothesline Project is helping survivors of abuse express themselves.

The Women’s Center in Waukesha sponsored The Clothesline Project on April 19th to honor Sexual Assault Awareness and Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The project gives women, who have been affected by abuse, an opportunity to express their emotions through art, by decorating T-shirts with messages and artwork.

The shirts were color-coded to depict the type of abuse suffered. Green shirts represent survivors of child sexual abuse and yellow shirts represent domestic violence. The finished T-shirts can be seen displayed on walls of U.W. Waukesa and WCTC.

The Women's Center, has served 9,000 women in the last year. The Executive Director Angela Mancuso,is hoping the project is cathartic for those who take part and that someone who see's this, will be more inclined to come for help.

The Clothesline Project will run through the end of April.

The Women’s Center in Waukesha offers an emergency shelter for women, a crisis hotline, as well as group and individual counseling. If you or someone you know needs assistance from The Women’s Center in Waukesha call the 24-hour hotline: 262-542-3828
